The Rock n’ Roll Imam

Ahmet Muzin Tuzer, the 42-year-old imam of the small village of Pinarbasi on the Mediterranean, ministers to his flock of about fifteen families, and then plays in a rock’n’roll band, FiRock, which he says is “a bit like Pink Floyd”.  They play Sufi-inspired sacred songs as well as genre-jumping originals. The Diyanet has launched an investigation, since imams are civil servants, but Tuzer says he doesn’t profit from the concerts and the lyrics are very much in line with what Islam represents.  If the Prophet Muhammed were alive today, he thinks, he’d approve.

  1. It was bound to happen sooner or later! And I bet more is coming soon –

  2. It’s also worth noting that the thumbnail image on the youtube video is not the Mr. Tüzer. It is the lead singer of the group who is apparently the imam. Click here for an image of him doing his day job.
